One of my co-workers was off to an event at a local allotment this afternoon. As she was struggling to remember the location, I surfed on to the allotment association website.
After she left, my eye alighted on this petition to make it compulsory that new developments include space for allotments. English law requires that local towns and parishes provide land for allotments if there are 12 or more people who request it (or six or some other number). However, given the constraints on land, most authorities can never meet demand. The Guardian article I linked to awhile ago, with the increasing popularity of vegetable and fruit growing, this is becoming a serious issue in many localities.
We are lucky in this village. There are two vacancies, if you are interested!
(I promise a polytunnel update tomorrow.)
