We have lift off

I lifted the rest of the yellow onions this evening as, according to the forecast, that’s it for dry weather for a few days.

A bumper crop, if I don’t say so myself. I can, therefore, recommend Shenshyu onions!

Baby leaves

Meanwhile, back at the raised bed, it has been a bumber year for salad leaves. Due to building work (note the scaffolding and bits of demolised chimney still littering the bed), I only used a small bit of the raised bed this year.

Despite all the disruption, dust and that, all four leaf types are doing well. The spinach is threatening to bolt for good, but so far it’s produced some delicious leaves. Same with the rocket though with cooler weather that problem has subsided. The rocket is very peppery. Much better than that supermarket stuff.

I’m living on salad (and a bit of cheese) sandwiches. Here’s hoping that the tomatoes and cucumbers are ready before everything goes to seed.

Tick off that weekend

5 July 2009

It was one of those days when the weather radar map looked like a dalmatian. Following yesterday’s scattered showers, today saw heavy five minute downpours every half an hour from 9.00 am onwards.

I managed to fit in a few jobs around the showers though my excursion up to the allotment coincided with the heaviest shower of the day.

Checking off the list for the weekend:

  • cabbages and broccoli sown; sowed a few chilis and parsley too though I doubt these will germinate
  • tomatoes fed and tops pricked out; fruit now beginning to pop out; it might just be the best tomato year yet
  • what with the wet weather, I lifted just ten out of 40 odd onions; they were planted in pouring rain, but would probably prefer to be lifted in dry conditions
  • digging and weeding? well, really dig sleeping on the sofa on wet Saturday afternoons or weeding the Saturday paper on Saturday for a change ;-)

Bean picking

3 July 2009

Picked a big bunch of broad beans this evening. Managed to get 1lb 4oz.

The pods are just about at their peak. So, even though this lot were for the freezer, there will be plenty more to eat fresh this weekend.

Jobs for the weekend:

  • lift yellow onions (their leaves have turned over and some are threatening to bolt
  • more digging
  • even more weeding
  • sowing cabbage and broccoli
